The Louisiana State University School of Medicine's Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Program offers a specialized fellowship in a unique subspecialty that focuses on the therapeutic use of oxygen under pressure for treating various medical conditions. Curriculum

The fellowship curriculum consists of 11 clinical months of training and one month of vacation. Throughout the clinical months, fellows rotate between two primary clinical training sites: West Jefferson Medical Center and University Medical Center (UMC). This rotation schedule facilitates ample training and exposure to a variety of hyperbaric medical cases. Additionally, 4 hours of didactic education takes place every Wednesday afternoon, including lectures from faculty, grand rounds, and a journal club.

The program emphasizes continuous learning through remote participation in monthly Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine (UHM) Fellows Dive Conferences and Grand Rounds conducted via Zoom. Furthermore, fellows have opportunities to attend specialized courses, such as the UHMS Medical Examiner of Divers course and the UHMS Physician Training in Dive Medicine course, enhancing their knowledge in underwater and hyperbaric medical practices.

Training Sites

Fellows will gain experience at:

West Jefferson Medical Center: A critical referral site for diving accidents, offering 24/7 call coverage and exposure to a wide range of hyperbaric treatment cases such as decompression illness, complex wounds, and toxic gas exposures.
University Medical Center: The regional safety-net hospital and Level 1 Trauma and Burn Center, running a wound clinic and hyperbaric medicine service. It provides diverse clinical exposure to complex hyperbaric medicine and wound care patients.

Research Opportunities

The program supports participation in research projects related to undersea and hyperbaric medicine. Fellows are encouraged to engage in academic initiatives that explore innovative treatments and medical practices within this niche field.

Application Requirements

Applicants seeking to join the fellowship must prepare and submit their CV, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation to the program coordinator. Importantly, the program only considers applicants on J-1 visas—H-1B visa sponsorship is not available. Notably, the program does not accept International Medical Graduates (IMGs) holding J-1 or H-1B visas.
