The Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This program accepts three residents each year at the PGY-1 level through the National Resident Matching Program. The residency encompasses five years of training, resulting in a total of 15 residents within the program. Surgical training and clinical education occurs at the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport - Academic Medical Center and the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).
1Curriculum and Rotations
During the residency, an extensive curriculum is provided through various formats, including conferences, Grand Rounds, and hands-on clinical experiences. The curriculum emphasizes comprehensive training across major subspecialty areas including facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, surgical oncology, laryngology, pediatric otolaryngology, otology/neurotology, and general otolaryngology. With an annual volume of about 2,000 surgeries and over 12,000 outpatient visits, residents gain substantial clinical exposure.
1Yearly Curriculum Breakdown
PGY-1: The first-year experience includes rotations across three ENT services that focus on diverse areas such as Rhinology, Neurotology, and Head and Neck. Additionally, residents gain foundational skills through rotations in General Surgery and Anesthesia during their second half of the year.
1PGY-2: In the second year, residents work closely with senior teams at the LSUHSC Shreveport, spending four months each on two of the main otolaryngology teams. Residents are expected to enhance their clinical skills while also deepening their understanding of patient evaluation and surgical techniques.
1PGY-3: During this year, residents are primarily assigned to one of the dedicated otolaryngology teams for nine months. This period includes an emphasis on basic science research, allowing residents to focus on research projects while continuing to engage with complex surgical cases.
1PGY-4: The fourth year features chief resident responsibilities and increased autonomy, wherein residents are involved in more complex cases and begin to supervise junior residents.
1PGY-5: The final year culminates in chief resident duties, where individuals have the opportunity to lead cases, perform advanced surgical procedures, and mentor junior colleagues.
1Research Opportunities
Research is a vital component of the residency, structured to encourage residents to engage in both clinical and basic science projects. PGY-3 residents are granted a dedicated research block that allows them to navigate through their scholarly activities without the burden of clinical duties.
1Unique Aspects of the Program
The program promotes a robust mentorship culture, pairing residents with faculty members who are experts in their respective subspecialties. This structure fosters a collaborative environment aimed at enhancing both clinical competence and confidence in surgical skills.
1Visa Sponsorship
The residency program offers visa support for international medical graduates (IMGs) through either J-1 or H-1B visa sponsorship, catering to the needs of diverse applicants and promoting an inclusive residency environment.
1Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The application to the Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program is competitive, welcoming both DO and IMG applicants, thus enhancing diversity within the resident cohort. Specific application requirements typically include completion of medical education, with certain limits on failed STEP exams. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to the field and the ability to thrive in collaborative medical settings.
