1232300C0The Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport offers a comprehensive four-year training program accredited by the ACGME. With twelve available positions, the program is designed to prepare residents for careers as pathologists in community service-oriented hospitals or academic institutions.
Curriculum and Rotations
Residents engage in combined rotations in both anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Anatomic pathology rotations feature diverse areas such as surgical pathology—including specialties like neuropathology, pediatric pathology, dermatopathology, and forensic pathology—as well as cytopathology and renal pathology. Clinical pathology encompasses hematology, medical microscopy, microbiology, blood bank/transfusion medicine, chemistry, toxicology, molecular pathology, cytogenetics, and virology. This extensive curriculum provides residents with a rounded education, equipping them with vital skills for diagnosing and managing various pathological conditions.
1Yearly research projects are encouraged, with opportunities to present findings at local forums and submit work for publication. Residents receive teaching experience through departmental and interdepartmental opportunities, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
1Training Goals and Competencies
The primary goal of the residency program is to develop competencies essential for providing high-quality pathology services. Residents will cultivate skills in interpreting surgical biopsies, autopsy findings, frozen sections, and a range of laboratory data across hematology, chemistry, and microbiology domains. The training program aligns with ACGME competencies, including patient care, medical knowledge, professionalism, systems-based practice, practice-based learning and improvement, and interpersonal & communication skills.
1Application Process
Applicants must submit their applications through ERAS, including critical documents such as medical school transcripts, a personal statement, USMLE scores, a Dean's letter, and three current letters of recommendation. The program is highly competitive, with a preference for applicants who have graduated from medical school within the past ten years, although well-qualified individuals from earlier classes may also be considered.
2The residency program evaluates USMLE scores carefully; generally, candidates who have failed any portion of the exam more than once are unlikely to be considered for an interview. Furthermore, applicants are encouraged to have strong references, particularly from pathologists or faculty members familiar with their work in pathology.
2Visa Support
The residency program offers visa sponsorship for qualified international medical graduates, specifically a J1 Visa, which allows participation in training in the United States. While US clinical experience is highly regarded, it is not a strict requirement for application.
2Training Environment and Community
Shreveport, Louisiana, is an area that strikes a balance between an expansive and diverse patient demographic and an intimate community feel among medical professionals. Residents will interact closely with faculty and peers, forming a supportive network conducive to professional growth. The program fosters a familial environment and encourages collaboration and mutual support among residents.
2Resident Experience
The program highlights experiences from current and past residents, sharing insights into the comprehensive training received and the opportunities available post-residency, including various fellowship paths in specialties like neuropathology and cytopathology. Training in a well-rounded, fast-paced environment ensures that residents are well-prepared for their future careers.
