The General Psychiatry Residency Program at Maine Medical Center is an ACGME-certified four-year postgraduate training program. Residents have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including a medical-psychiatry inpatient unit, consultation-liaison service, and outpatient clinics. The curriculum includes rotations at Spring Harbor Hospital, focusing on adult psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, and developmental disorders. Residents also receive training in a wide range of psychotherapeutic techniques including CBT, group therapy, family therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
Maine Medical Center offers a unique five-year General Psychiatry/Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Integrated track for applicants interested in pursuing child training without going through two separate matching processes. The program provides opportunities for exploration and mentorship for residents unsure about fellowship training.
Additionally, there is a Rural Psychiatry Track Program available for residents interested in combining the benefits of the general residency program with outpatient rotations in rural settings in places like Damariscotta, Rockport, and Belfast, Maine. Residents in this track experience a mixture of inpatient and subspecialty rotations before focusing on rural outpatient work in their later years.
The didactic curriculum includes a variety of seminars and conferences tailored to different levels of training and interests. Faculty members are committed to providing excellent teaching and clinical care, coming from diverse experiences and backgrounds.
To apply to the General Psychiatry or Rural Psychiatry Programs, applicants need to submit various application materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service by the specified deadline. Requirements include medical school transcript, personal statement, curriculum vitae, USMLE or COMLEX scores, Dean's letter, and letters of recommendation.
