Maine Medical Center Program

The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at Maine Medical Center (MMC) offers an in-depth, comprehensive education in obstetrics and gynecology, aiming to produce competent physicians and surgeons who are not only focused on patient care but also on continuous learning, teaching, and contributing healthily to their communities. This ACGME-accredited program emphasizes developing critical thinking, evidence-based medicine, and complex problem-solving skills, supporting its residents in maintaining a balanced personal and professional life.

The clinical training offered spans the full spectrum of obstetrics and gynecology as outlined by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, providing experiences under the supervision of both full-time faculty and experienced practitioners from the community. The program is designed around the three pillars advocated by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology: Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Ambulatory Medicine, ensuring a well-rounded residency experience.

Residents in this program benefit from being part of a tertiary referral hospital for the whole state of Maine, which allows exposure to a diverse and extensive patient population. The structured curriculum includes a significant amount of time dedicated to obstetrics and gynecology rotations, with progressive responsibility levels as residents advance. The training is designed to build robust surgical skills, including competence in minimally invasive surgery. Moreover, residents actively participate in independent research projects and departmental quality improvement projects, enhancing their analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

The application process for the OB/GYN residency program at MMC requires completion of the ERAS application by October 1st, including transcripts, Dean's letter, three letters of recommendation, and USMLE or COMLEX scores. The program only sponsors candidates with a J-1 Visa. It also aligns with APGO/CREOG’s national standards around the OBGYN residency application and interview process, including the use of a Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE). Importantly, applicants should possess a valid driver’s license and automobile to facilitate access to off-site rotations and surgeries, although this is not strictly mandatory.

Interviews are conducted virtually, scheduled from fall through early winter, and booked via Thalamus. The program prides itself on a small, supportive community with significant academic resources, set in an appealing geographical location.
