Welcome to the Boston Medical Center Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This program is integral to the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and offers a robust training environment focusing on clinical excellence, health equity, and reproductive justice. The faculty's dedication to serving diverse communities in Boston contributes significantly to the educational and clinical experience, creating a strong foundation for residents.
The educational structure includes an environment rich in clinical experiences, complemented by dedicated faculty across various generalist and sub-specialty divisions such as Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM), Complex Family Planning (CFP), Gynecologic Oncology (Gyn Onc), Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS), Urogynecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI).
Curriculum Overview
Residents gain comprehensive medical knowledge and surgical expertise through a structured curriculum that emphasizes robust ambulatory clinical experiences and a high volume of complex surgical cases. Training is conducted through a blend of didactic and hands-on learning opportunities, including Grand Rounds that take place every Wednesday morning, attended by faculty, residents, and medical students.
Didactics and Simulation Training
In addition to Grand Rounds, the residency program includes a dedicated didactics schedule, ensuring residents are proficient in the essential learning objectives and competencies of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Solomont Center for Medical Simulation provides residents with hands-on experience, allowing them to engage in a variety of simulated procedures necessary for clinical practice.
Rotations
The residency program follows a well-defined rotation schedule, with different experiences planned for each year:
- PGY 1: Focus is on foundational knowledge and skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology, emphasizing labor management, surgical training, and outpatient care.
- PGY 2: Continued development of clinical responsibilities, with rotations in high-risk obstetrics and gynecological surgeries, including exposure to subspecialties.
- PGY 3: Leadership roles within the clinical settings, managing complex cases, and increasing operative experience.
- PGY 4: Heavy surgical case load, leadership roles, and personalized ambulatory experiences tailored to prepare residents for independent practice.
The curriculum includes elements such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Interactive Learning Discussions, and clinical simulation, which integrate both practical and theoretical aspects.
Research Opportunities
The program encourages resident involvement in research, supporting scholarly projects and the necessary skills for academic contributions in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Mentoring from faculty across various specialties provides a pathway for residents to engage in impactful studies, with resources available for grant applications and peer-reviewed publications.

One notable feature of the Boston Medical Center program is its commitment to Project RESPECT, an initiative providing comprehensive care for pregnant patients struggling with substance use disorders. This program underscores the department's dedication to addressing health disparities and promoting reproductive justice, fostering an environment of holistic patient care.
