Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Program

The Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is a five-year, ACGME-approved pathway designed to provide comprehensive training in both Diagnostic Radiology (DR) and Interventional Radiology (IR). This innovative program includes a year of internship, followed by three years of DR and two years of advanced IR training. Graduates receive dual certification from the American Board of Radiology (ABR) upon successful completion of the residency and the final certification exam.

In the initial phase of the residency, which spans 3 years and 4 months, residents will engage in a varied curriculum closely aligned with existing diagnostic radiology modules. During this time, they will participate in rotations across core diagnostic sub-specialties such as ultrasound, mammography, abdominal imaging, chest radiology, emergency radiology, and musculoskeletal radiology. Rotations specifically focused on interventional radiology and other procedural specialties will also be included. Residents will participate in diagnostic lectures and educational activities in conjunction with the DR residency, which encompasses monthly IR Journal Clubs and IR Case Conferences. This structure lays a strong foundation for future procedural training in IR.

As residents progress into the PGY-5 year, they will transition to spending dedicated time within the Interventional Radiology service. Here, they will complete IR-related rotations, including Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and vascular surgery, and actively participate in performing procedures in the IR suites. By graduation, residents will have completed a total of 24 blocks of IR rotations, ensuring that they meet all ACGME procedural and interpretation requirements.

Curriculum and Rotations

The educational experience is meticulously structured, encompassing core rotations and specialized IR training. During core rotations, IR Integrated Residents will work in angio suites alongside attending physicians, gaining exposure to a range of complex vascular and non-vascular procedures. Special attention is given to outpatient IR through the Advanced Vascular Care (AVCare) center, where residents become familiar with managing dialysis access and providing vital outpatient support.

Residents are trained across multiple disciplines. They will rotate in the ICU to care for high-acuity patients, spend one month on the vascular surgery service to understand the management of peripheral arterial disease, and will have a dedicated pediatric interventional radiology rotation at Boston Children’s Hospital. This extensive experience is complemented by a rigorous didactic curriculum which includes daily clinical teaching rounds, weekly lectures, and monthly quality improvement projects.

Research Opportunities

Research plays a significant role in the IR Integrated Residency at BIDMC. Residents are expected to collaborate with faculty on ongoing research initiatives and are required to complete one scholarly project and one Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance project during their training. The program encourages academic participation and collaboration with esteemed faculty and visiting professors, enhancing the learning experience.

Application Requirements

The application process is designed to attract a diverse range of candidates. All applicants must complete a PGY-1 preliminary year in medicine, surgery, or in a transitional program. The application requirements include a complete ERAS application, an official USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 score report, an official transcript from all attended medical schools, a medical student performance evaluation (MSPE), a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. An important aspect is that all USMLE score reports must be requested electronically through ERAS. The application deadline for this residency is November 1, followed by virtual interviews scheduled from mid-November to late December.
