Integrated Residency Overview

The Boston University Medical Center Program in Interventional Radiology offers comprehensive training that incorporates both interventional and diagnostic radiology. The program facilitates a comprehensive educational experience at a Level 1 trauma center, which serves the most underserved communities in Boston. The clinical focus includes trauma, vascular interventions, interventional oncology, and neurointerventional procedures, providing residents with extensive hands-on experience supported by a team of dedicated faculty and physician assistants.1

Curriculum Details

Academic Curriculum

The residency's academic curriculum is structured to involve both resident and faculty participation in daily conferences, including a diagnostic radiology conference and a dedicated interventional radiology working conference each morning. Multidisciplinary conferences are also a significant component, facilitating collaboration with other specialties and allowing residents to gain vital experience in case presentations.2

Clinical Rotations

The clinical curriculum spans five years, with the first three years focused on diagnostic radiology. The final two years are dedicated to interventional radiology and specific rotations in critical care and vascular surgery. The comprehensive interventional radiology clinical curriculum includes 18 months on interventional radiology, 5 months on interventional radiology-related rotations, and 1 month in the ICU. Notably, residents engage in varied rotations including but not limited to neurointerventional radiology and pediatric radiology at Boston Children’s Hospital.2

Clinical Experience

BMC is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including modern interventional procedural suites, advanced imaging technologies, and a robust outpatient clinic where residents manage both inpatient and outpatient care. The hands-on learning continues into the outpatient clinic setting, where residents provide continuity of care and develop their roles as primary clinicians in managing patients undergoing interventional procedures.3

Special Programs

ESIR Pathway

The program also offers the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway for those interested in focusing their training on interventional radiology from an earlier stage. This program provides residents with the opportunity to apply for ESIR after completing initial IR rotations, expanding their knowledge and increasing career flexibility as the field of IR evolves.5

Preliminary Surgical Internship

In collaboration with the surgery department, the residency program guarantees a preliminary surgical internship for matched trainees, allowing them early integration into the BMC community. This unique arrangement offers residents an avenue to build their clinical skills and relationships with various surgical teams before commencing formal IR training, thereby enhancing their preparedness for the residency itself.6

Visa Support
