Boston University Medical Center Program

The Boston University Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the ACGME and the RRC. The program has 25 residents, with five residents accepted per year through the NRMP into two separate programs. There are four traditional five-year positions and one six-year position which includes a basic science research year focusing on skeletal tissue repair and osteoarthritis epidemiology. The internship year covers ACGME and ABOS Orthopaedic Program requirements, including various surgical specialties.

During the four years of orthopaedic experience, residents rotate through various hospitals like Boston Medical Center, Lahey Clinic, Boston VA Medical Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital. The program offers a structured educational curriculum including lectures, daily conferences, bioskills sessions, journal clubs, and visiting professor events. Residents are also involved in research, leading to national presentation and peer-reviewed publications. Each resident completes a comprehensive research project before graduation.

The program emphasizes individual academic potential and seeks mature candidates willing to commit to rigorous training. Residents receive mentorship from faculty members and are actively engaged in program development. Graduates from this program mostly pursue specialty-specific fellowships and are well-prepared for private practice.

The rotation schedule is divided into PGY-1 through PGY-5 with a separate six-year research position available. The program aims to provide diverse patient experiences, emphasize the therapeutic relationship with patients, and promote evidence-based care. Educational components include graduated responsibility, diverse case exposure, faculty support, patient care experience, resources, research opportunities, structured conferences, funded educational courses, and a focus on lifelong learning.

Additionally, recent graduates have successfully matched into various specialty fellowships across prestigious institutions. Residents benefit from exposure to different practice settings, patient populations, and cultural backgrounds, enhancing their clinical acumen and proficiency in diverse orthopaedic subspecialties.
