The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Albany Medical College is a five-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to provide comprehensive training in various aspects of orthopedic surgery. The program emphasizes both clinical excellence and research, offering residents exposure to a wide array of orthopedic practices in a top-tier medical center.
1Curriculum Structure
The residency features a well-structured curriculum reliant on increasing responsibility as residents progress from the intern (PGY 1) year through to the senior (PGY 5) year. The first year serves as an essential foundation, including rotations in orthopedic surgery, trauma surgery, plastic surgery, surgical ICU, and physical medicine. From PGY 2 to PGY 5, residents engage in more hands-on patient care and surgical responsibilities across a broad range of specialties including trauma, reconstruction, pediatric surgery, and more.
3Training Sites
Residents train at several locations, ensuring a rich diversity of clinical exposure:
- Albany Medical Center: A 766-bed Level 1 Trauma Center serving northeastern New York and western New England, exposing residents to adult and pediatric trauma cases, spine surgeries, joint reconstructions, and more.
- Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center: A 156-bed facility focusing on general orthopedics, particularly adult reconstructive and sports medicine.
- St. Peter's Hospital: A 482-bed community hospital where residents experience general orthopedics along with subspecialties like foot and ankle surgery.
- Capital Region Ambulatory Surgery Center: This center primarily handles elective surgeries, allowing residents to gain practical experience in less acute settings.
Research Opportunities
Albany Medical College fosters an environment that prioritizes research, collaborating with institutions like Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College on various translational and basic science projects. Residents are encouraged to engage in clinical or basic science research and must complete a publishable thesis by the end of their residency.
1Resident Support and Wellness
The program is committed to promoting resident wellness and work-life balance. Numerous resources are available to help residents manage stress and avoid burnout, ensuring that trainees are supported throughout their demanding schedules.
4Application Requirements and Competitiveness
Albany Medical College's Orthopaedic Surgery Residency is considerably competitive. Eligible applicants may include graduates from accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada, as well as graduates from international medical schools who meet specific qualifications. Applicants must submit scores of 220 or higher for USMLE Step I and Step II on their first attempt.
