Curriculum Overview

PGY-1

First-year residents concentrate on foundational pediatric medical knowledge and hands-on patient care skills. Interns are closely supervised by senior residents, fellows, and faculty, allowing them to familiarize themselves with both the healthcare system at Albany Medical Center and the surrounding community.

PGY-2

As second-year residents, individuals transition into more autonomous roles while enhancing their medical knowledge and leadership capabilities. They have opportunities for teaching and begin engaging with individualized block rotations that align with ACGME guidelines, allowing further customization of their residency experience.

PGY-3

The third year focuses on leadership and teaching skills as residents start taking on more responsibilities within their teams. Critical thinking and independent decision-making are emphasized as they approach graduation.

Training and Rotations

The residency experiences are enhanced by conferences and electives. PedSTAR Program

The PedSTAR™ (Scholarly Track for Advocacy and Research) offers an immersive experience focused on advocacy, research design, and quality improvement initiatives. Each intern receives four weeks free from clinical duties to engage in this track, reinforcing skills in research project development with the goal of implementation by the end of their training.

Resident Wellness

Visa Sponsorship

The program primarily supports J-1 visa sponsorship. It does not sponsor H-1B visas, and candidates should ensure they meet the legal requirements to work in the United States.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

While the program is competitive, it remains approachable for a range of applicants, including U.S. graduates, DO graduates, and international medical graduates (IMGs). Applicants must meet specific criteria, including:

• Medical school graduation within three years of the date of application.
• Completion of the USMLE Step 1, with Step 2 CK preferred by the time of application.
• For IMGs, a valid ECFMG certificate is necessary, along with compliance with the state's clerkship training requirements.

Failure of examinations can impact application eligibility, highlighting the importance of strong performance on required assessments.
