Albany Med Health System Program

The Psychiatry Residency program at Albany Medical Center offers a comprehensive four-year training experience, designed to equip residents with the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competencies required for the independent practice of general psychiatry. The residency consists of 28 residents who are engaged in a diverse curriculum that integrates broad clinical exposure, didactic instruction, research opportunities, and mentorship from experienced faculty members. Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured to encompass various aspects of psychiatry and mental health care over the four years:

PGY-1

In the first year, residents focus on learning basic knowledge and skills in psychopathology, psychopharmacology, and differential diagnosis. The rotation schedule includes:

• Four blocks of medicine
• Two blocks of neurology
• Four blocks of inpatient psychiatry
• Two blocks of emergency psychiatry
• One block of consultation liaison psychiatry

This phase also includes mandatory calls, where residents participate in weekend shifts and emergency assessments.

PGY-2

During the second year, the exposure to a variety of patient populations increases, focusing on psychotherapy, addiction, geriatrics, and children and adolescents. Residents take part in:

• Four blocks of consultation liaison psychiatry
• Two blocks of child and adolescent psychiatry
• Four months of inpatient psychiatry

PGY-3

The third year allows residents to deepen their skills in psychopharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, with outpatient rotations that enhance clinical judgment and patient interaction.

PGY-4

In the final year, residents focus on consolidating their expertise and engaging in teaching and supervising junior residents. They also have opportunities for elective rotations and developing research projects.

Research Opportunities

The program encourages residents to participate in scholarly research. Recent initiatives have explored topics ranging from childhood experiences' impacts on mental health to the relationship between clinical practices and patient outcomes. Training Sites

Training occurs primarily at Albany Medical Center, supplemented by rotations at affiliated institutions such as the Capital District Psychiatric Center (CDPC) and the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center. Each of these sites provides distinct clinical experiences:

• CDPC offers extensive psychiatric services including an inpatient adult unit and child and adolescent services.
• VA Medical Center emphasizes treatment modalities tailored for veterans and their families.

Visa Support

The program offers sponsorship for J-1 visas only, as it does not support H-1B visa applications. This provision allows international medical graduates (IMGs) the opportunity to train in the program, given they meet the specified educational requirements.

Competitiveness and Applicant Requirements

The application process is competitive, with a focus on applicants who have either experience in psychiatry or neuroscience. Note the specific eligibility requirements:

• Graduates of accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada.
• International graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and be from an approved institution by New York State Education Department.
• Applications must be submitted through ERAS, with a maximum time elapsed since graduation set at five years if not actively practicing.
• No strict cutoff scores for exams, although candidates with fewer attempts are preferred.
