Albany Medical Center Program

Albany Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program is a comprehensive three-year training initiative that is fully accredited by the ACGME. Curriculum Overview

PGY-1

During the first year, residents primarily engage in hospital medicine and emergency care, with a focus on transitioning from theoretical frameworks of medical school to the practicalities of bedside decision-making. Residents spend nine months on inpatient training and three months in outpatient settings, beginning to build their patient panels for continuity of care throughout the residency.

PGY-2

The second year enhances skills in ambulatory care, combining inpatient training with increased exposure to the Family Medicine Center and surgical subspecialties. This year fosters generalist abilities through close mentorship from practicing family physicians and behavioral science educators, focusing on treating patients as part of their family and community contexts.

PGY-3

In the third year, the program shifts focus to individual resident goals, emphasizing psychosocial care, practice management, and family medicine-specific issues. Residents engage in teaching junior colleagues and participate in case discussions, solidifying their understanding and commitment to lifelong learning.

Residency training occurs across multiple partner institutions, including Albany Medical Center, Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, and affiliated community hospitals. Key facilities include:

• Family Medicine Center: A contemporary facility featuring extensive clinical resources and a collaborative workspace for residents and faculty.
• St. Mary’s Healthcare: Allows residents to gain experience in orthopedic and general medicine settings.
• Engeye Health Clinic (Uganda): A unique international training opportunity where residents engage in healthcare provision within resource-limited settings, gaining a broader perspective on global health issues.

Albany Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency promotes research and community engagement, allowing residents to participate in multidisciplinary projects and outreach activities, including homeless care initiatives and health fairs. Application Requirements and Competitiveness

Eligibility criteria for the residency program stipulate that all applicants must submit through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program specifically considers:
- Graduates from accredited U.S. or Canadian medical schools.
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with a valid ECFMG certificate.
- Applicants must not have graduated more than two years before applying, although prior residency or clinical experience in the U.S. may be considered.

The program sponsors J-1 visas but does not sponsor H-1B visas, making it IMG-friendly while maintaining a competitive selection process.
