The Psychiatry Residency program at Mohawk Valley Health System is designed to provide a well-rounded training experience for residents, focusing on the comprehensive education in psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. The program is based out of Faxton St Luke’s Hospital and aims to produce residents who are not only clinically proficient but also connected to the community they serve.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured to meet ACGME accreditation standards and utilizes the clinical strengths of the faculty. Residents will experience a 13-block schedule, with each block characterized as a four-week rotation. Didactics occur every Thursday, covering crucial topics in psychiatry, such as psychopharmacology and psychotherapy among others. Although the program is not involved in clinical or bench research, residents participate in a scholarly project related to psychiatric medicine and have the opportunity to present their findings during Grand Rounds. Competitiveness and Application Process

The Psychiatry Residency program is competitive. An important aspect of the application includes having solid board scores, community involvement, and positive letters of recommendation that reflect both clinical strengths and personal qualities. Applicants should possess USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores of 220 or higher, or 450 or higher for COMLEX, alongside an updated CV and a personal statement of goals 6. All selected candidates are expected to be less than two years out of medical school at the time of application.

The residency will accept four new residents per class, solely accepting PGY1 residents in the initial phases of the program's growth. Importantly, the program does not sponsor visa applications for international medical graduates 5.

The program does not provide housing for residents but assists in securing apartments through local landlords. This may involve reserving a limited number of apartments on a first-come, first-served basis.
