The Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency Program at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) offers a comprehensive and structured five-year curriculum aimed at forming highly skilled radiologists equipped with expertise in both diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures. Program Overview

This residency is especially built to integrate the disciplines of diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology over five years, which includes an initial year of clinical training typically completed in general surgery at MHMMC. This thorough training is designed to prepare residents for the complexities of modern interventional radiology, addressing a variety of clinical conditions through minimally invasive techniques.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum is divided into specific years of training:

• PGY 1: This is the preliminary year, focusing on general surgery or a related area of direct patient care.
• PGY 2-3: These years concentrate on diagnostic radiology, with substantial exposure to different subspecialties including abdominal, breast, cardiothoracic, and pediatric radiology.
• PGY 4-6: Emphasis is placed on interventional radiology, where residents gain significant hands-on experience in various procedures from vascular to non-vascular interventions.

Every resident has access to a well-rounded exposure to imaging techniques, drawing from numerous modalities such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, and radiography during their training. Each area has defined competencies and rotations to ensure comprehensive teaching.

Clinical Rotations

The residents participate in numerous clinical rotations which include:

• Abdominal radiology
• Breast radiology
• Cardiothoracic radiology
• Musculoskeletal radiology
• Neuroradiology
• Pediatric radiology
• Emergency radiology
• Interventional radiology (dedicated time primarily in PGY-5 and PGY-6)

Additionally, residents can engage in off-service rotations such as neuroendovascular interventions, interventional nephrology, vascular surgery, and critical care, enhancing their procedural breadth and approach to patient care.

Research and Education

Research is an integral part of the program. Residents are required to complete at least one scholarly project and one quality improvement initiative under faculty mentorship before graduation. The program provides dedicated research time during the PGY-3 year, fostering research skills which are crucial for future practice.

Conferences and Didactics

MaineHealth prioritizes the academic development of residents with structured didactic sessions. PGY-2 to PGY-4 residents benefit from protected time dedicated to a mix of lectures, case discussions, and clinical skills training each week. A total of 11 hours of protected didactic time is provided per week, emphasizing active learning and progressive engagement. Additionally, various conferences cover essential radiological knowledge and practical applications.

Facilities and Training Sites

The program operates out of MHMMC, which is a large 700-bed facility and the only Level I Trauma Center in Maine. This extensive infrastructure allows residents to experience a wide range of clinical cases. Residents also rotate through St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital, further enriching their hands-on learning and exposure to diverse patient populations.

Minimum qualifications include completion of the USMLE Step 1 and a year of direct patient care experience in an ACGME-accredited residency program.
