Overview of the Urology Residency Program

The Urology Residency Program at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) is designed to provide a comprehensive, clinically oriented training experience. The program emphasizes excellence in patient care, quality teaching, and research in the urology field. It consists of five years of rigorous training, beginning with a six-month general surgery internship, followed by four and a half years focused on urology.

The residency framework is tailored to develop residents into complete urologists, proficient in technical skills and equipped with the analytical skills required for clinical studies and patient care responsibilities.

1

Curriculum Structure

Each resident in the Urology Residency Program undergoes a structured educational approach that enhances their clinical decision-making and responsibilities through didactic sessions. The curriculum is based on the American Urological Association's Core Curriculum, ensuring residents gain a strong knowledge base in urological disease processes.

The program includes:

  • General Surgery Internship: Lasts for six months and serves as the foundation for entering urology.
  • Urology Rotations: Residents engage in various rotations covering fundamental urological specialties throughout the training. This immersion fosters expertise in Endo-urology, Pediatric urology, and more advanced robotic and laparoscopic techniques.
2

Rotations and Training Sites

The primary training sites for the residency include:

  • MaineHealth Maine Medical Center - Portland (primary clinical training site)
  • MaineHealth Maine Medical Center - Biddeford
  • Portland VA Clinic
  • MaineHealth Surgery Center - Scarborough

These sites offer diverse clinical experiences, from inpatient care to outpatient services, allowing residents to gain hands-on experience across the continuum of urological care.

3

Conferences and Didactics

The program incorporates protected time for resident-led didactic sessions, held daily except on Wednesdays. The educational offerings include:

  • Journal Club
  • Pediatric Urology Conference
  • Grand Rounds
  • Monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conferences
  • Biweekly tumors and indications conference

These conferences allow residents to engage in discussion around current literature and new advancements in urology.

4

Research Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activity, with structured support for clinical research projects. These opportunities culminate in presentations at national and local conferences. Residents are generally expected to complete quality improvement projects and submit abstracts to significant urological gatherings. The MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) plays a pivotal role in providing research facilities and support.

Recent research topics pursued by residents include:

  • Genetic factors in prostate cancer
  • Quality improvement initiatives in bladder cancer care
  • Advancements in robotic surgeries

The curriculum includes training and discussions on these topics, aiming to create a supportive environment for residents regardless of their backgrounds.
