Program Overview

The Boston Combined Residency Program (BCRP) offers a unique four-year combined training in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics through collaboration with Harvard Medical School. The program is structured to ensure graduates are qualified and board eligible in both specialties, benefiting from a rich blend of clinical experience and research opportunities in genetics. The first-year residents complete their pediatrics residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center, experiencing a rotation schedule similar to that of the categorical and leadership tracks.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum integrates pediatrics and medical genetics seamlessly, with the first year focused on pediatrics, followed by alternating six-month periods in both specialties during the second and third years. Residents gain extensive exposure to various core pediatrics rotations, complemented by additional subspecialty training. The final year is dedicated primarily to research, allowing residents to develop a personalized research project related to medical genetics. This design ensures that trainees are prepared to provide comprehensive care to infants, children, and adolescents.

Clinical Rotations

Residents engage in diverse clinical environments, with 50% of their training occurring in ambulatory settings. Rotations include key areas such as oncology, child development, emergency medicine, and more. Application Requirements and Process

The program utilizes a holistic application review process and does not rely on board scores alone. Applicants are evaluated on their comprehensive experiences and accomplishments beyond academics. Interviews are typically offered late in the application cycle, and successful applicants usually showcase a record that includes significant extracurricular activities and leadership roles.

International Applicants and Visa Support

The BCRP welcomes international medical graduates and offers sponsorship for H1B and J1 visas, contingent upon successful completion of the applicable USMLE examinations. For H1B visa sponsorship, applicants must pass the USMLE Step 3. ECFMG certification is also a prerequisite by the given deadlines. A maximum of 6 to 8 international applicants requiring visas are typically accepted each year.

The application process is competitive, with international applicants required to have exceptional academic records, high USMLE scores, and strong clinical experience in English-speaking medical environments. The program limits positions for applicants who have previously completed a pediatric residency abroad to ensure a high caliber of prospective residents.
