Program Overview

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency that includes both an integrated and an independent training pathway. The integrated program spans six years of training, while the independent program requires three years following completion of another surgical residency.

Curriculum Structure

The residency program prioritizes a comprehensive education covering the essential competencies in plastic surgery. For the integrated residency, the first two years involve core surgical rotations, including trauma, anesthesiology, dermatology, and various surgical subspecialties, including two months dedicated specifically to plastic surgery at BIDMC.

The subsequent years (PGY-3 to PGY-6) are committed to extensive plastic surgery rotations at BIDMC, Boston Children’s Hospital, and other affiliated sites, where fellows gain hands-on experience in major areas such as Craniofacial, Hand and Extremity Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery, and Breast Reconstruction.

For the integrated residency program, candidates must be graduating medical students and applicants are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), with one position available annually. The program requires that applicants have completed medical school and holds eligibility for NRMP match. Those applying for the independent program must have completed a surgical residency, and foreign medical graduates must fulfill the prerequisite training in accredited programs.
