3130362C0The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is an integrated, six-year training program designed for the comprehensive education and experiential training in all facets of plastic surgery. This program aims to foster compassionate and ethical plastic surgeons dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of diverse patient populations while simultaneously advancing the field through research and education.
The program’s philosophy is rooted in a commitment to experiential learning that not only produces technically skilled surgeons but also encourages personal growth, professionalism, leadership, and ingenuity. The residency program seeks to prepare residents to become self-actualized and confident surgeons, equipped to deliver superior healthcare in a variety of clinical settings.
Curriculum
The curriculum incorporates a blend of clinical practice, seminars, and didactic sessions. Residents receive foundational education in the core principles of plastic surgery through a regularly scheduled Core Curriculum Lecture Series that is designed to prepare them for both written and oral board examinations.
The educational framework emphasizes hands-on learning and is complemented by extensive training in anatomy, surgical techniques, and innovative procedures through various laboratories and clinics. Critical analysis of current literature is integral to the curriculum, facilitated through Journal Club meetings where residents present and review scholarly articles, enhancing their analytical skills.
1Rotations
The residency includes multidisciplinary rotations that provide comprehensive exposure to various surgical specialties. In the first two years (PGY1 and PGY2), residents complete rotations in general surgery, orthopedic hand surgery, emergency medicine, and more, with six months dedicated to plastic surgery service. Starting from PGY3, the focus shifts primarily to plastic surgery, with rotations at high-acuity nursing facilities including Maine Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, and Boston Children's Hospital.
Each rotation is structured to offer progressive responsibility, allowing residents to perform surgical procedures under the supervision of attending surgeons, develop patient management skills, and build confidence in critical decision-making. The chief year (PGY6) allows customization of elective rotations that align with individual career goals, including opportunities for international service and community outreach through mission trips.
2Research Opportunities
Research is a pivotal component of the residency program. Residents are encouraged to select a research project early in their training, working closely with staff mentors who lead ongoing clinical investigations or basic science projects. Dedicated time is allocated for research activities, and residents are supported financially to present their findings at national conferences. The ability to engage in research prepares residents for subsequent academic pursuits or specialized fellowship training post-residency.
3Application Process
Admission to the residency program is competitive, with two resident positions available each year. Applicants must submit their materials through the Plastic Surgery Common Application (PSCA) and participate in interviews conducted by the program's faculty. The program values diverse backgrounds and experiences, making it relatively DO and IMG-friendly. However, applicants are generally expected to have completed their medical education within a certain timeframe, and specific requirements regarding the number of attempts on USMLE Step exams may apply.
4Visa Support
The Plastic Surgery Residency Program provides visa sponsorship for international medical graduates, typically supporting J-1 visa applications. The program collaborates with ECFMG to assist qualifying candidates in navigating the visa process effectively.
5Unique Aspects
Throughout the residency, residents benefit from a nurturing environment that promotes well-being and resilience among trainees. There is a strong emphasis on mentorship and collaboration among residents and the faculty, fostering a collegial atmosphere conducive to learning. Additionally, the program integrates advanced training in both aesthetic and reconstructive procedures, ensuring residents emerge as well-rounded surgeons prepared for the modern landscape of plastic surgery.
