Structure of the Residency

PGY1, Fundamental Clinical Skills Year

The first year includes rotations at both St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Massachusetts, structured as transitional internships. Rotations encompass a diverse range of specialties: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Units, Cardiology, Pulmonology, and Anesthesiology. This year is pivotal as residents are introduced to basic anesthetic techniques, including regional anesthesia.

CA-1 Year

In the CA1 year, residents delve into the fundamentals of anesthesia. They gain hands-on experience with patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures, and engage early with obstetric anesthesia under supervision. This year is unique in that all residents participate in cardiac anesthesia, offering critical exposure to complex cases and invasive monitoring techniques.

CA-2 Year

The CA2 year expands residents' responsibilities, introducing more complex cases including major vascular and thoracic surgeries. Residents receive critical care training and rotate through several affiliated hospitals, including Boston Children’s Hospital and Lahey Clinic, which enriches their educational experience in pediatric anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, and liver transplantation.

CA-3 Year

In the final year, CA3 residents have opportunities to specialize based on individual interests. They engage in rotations specifically focusing on post-anesthetic care, regional anesthesia, and other areas, with possibilities for research electives and quality improvement initiatives as well. The program allows for flexible scheduling to ensure comprehensive training and personal development.

Curriculum

The curriculum meets criteria established by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and aims to prepare residents for all aspects of modern anesthetic practice. The educational framework informs them on specializations, including cardiac, obstetric, and pediatric anesthesia. Admission into the anesthesia residency at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center is competitive, welcoming both DO and IMG candidates. Applicants should maintain strong academic backgrounds. Special application requirements include three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, curriculum vitae, medical school transcripts, a dean's letter, and USMLE transcripts for Steps I and II. An essential requirement for CA-1 applicants is the completion of Step III prior to the start of the CA-1 year.
