  • Adult Cancer and Adult Genetics Clinics

Specialized laboratory rotations are included in the program, allowing residents to engage in experiences within UNC's Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory, the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, and the Duke Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism Laboratory. Residents participate in genetics sub-specialty clinics as well, offering exposure to clinics focusing on conditions such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and neurogenetic disorders.

Training Environment

The program is administered through the Department of Pediatrics Division of Genetics and Metabolism, with all training primarily taking place at UNC Hospitals. Collaboration with other departments such as Genetics, Pathology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology enhances the residents' educational experience.

Research Opportunities

Residents have the opportunity to engage in research within various genetics-related fields. The program allows for six months of elective time dedicated to research or manuscript preparation, encouraging residents to pursue independently designed research projects that align with their interests.

Application Guidelines

Entry into the Medical Genetics Residency Program requires completion of two or more years in a primary specialty training program, typically from an ACGME-accredited residency in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Obstetrics-Gynecology. Note that the program is not currently accepting applications for the 2025 ERAS season; however, the Pediatric Genetics Combined Residency programs are open for graduating medical students.
