Program Overview

The University of North Carolina Hospital's Diagnostic Radiology residency program offers a comprehensive training experience designed to cultivate proficient, compassionate, and knowledgeable radiologists. Curriculum and Rotations

Residents will engage in night float shifts, which foster autonomous decision-making while allowing first-hand involvement in complex imaging procedures as they become “first chair” during crucial diagnostic moments. This hands-on approach equips residents with the confidence and expertise to manage high volumes of diagnostic imaging, including interventional cases.1

Research Opportunities

Research is a pivotal component of training at UNC Hospitals. Residents are strongly encouraged to pursue research projects, and UNC provides a supportive environment for residents presenting at national conferences, including financial assistance for travel. Published research experience can enhance the residency application, although it is not a prerequisite for entry into the program.1

Application Process

Applications to the UNC Diagnostic Radiology residency must be submitted via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) guidelines. Applicants require a completed ERAS application, including a personal statement, medical school transcript, USMLE scores, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation (LOR). The program accepts both U.S. and foreign medical graduates; however, foreign medical graduates must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and must be eligible for a J-1 visa to participate in the program since H-1B visas are not sponsored.3

Significantly, there is no cutoff date for medical school graduation or minimum board score requirement, making the program accessible to a diverse range of applicants, including DO and IMG candidates.4
