The University of North Carolina Hospitals Program offers a two-year ACGME-accredited categorical Medical Genetics Residency program designed to prepare physicians for Board Certification in Medical Genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The program focuses on training physicians to be independent clinical geneticists proficient in providing comprehensive medical genetics services, collaborating in research activities, and effectively communicating their expertise. Clinical experience includes working with adult and pediatric patients with various genetic conditions in multispecialty teams.
The program includes 18 months of broad-based clinically-oriented medical genetics rotations covering Pediatric General Genetics and Metabolism Clinics, Adult Cancer and Genetics Clinics, as well as laboratory rotations in various genetics laboratories. Six months of elective time allow for research or more in-depth training. Candidates may apply after completing two or more years of primary specialty training, with preference given to applicants with prior residency training in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Obstetrics-Gynecology.
The Medical Genetics Residency Program at the University of North Carolina Hospitals participates in the NRMP Fellowship Match, and application information is available through ERAS.
