Programs Offered

1. Medical Genetics and Genomics Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship

This is a 12-month training program aimed at preparing Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) to evaluate and treat genetic disorders across all age groups. The fellowship includes rotations in various specialties and laboratories at the Greenwood Genetic Center and may involve clinical visits at multiple locations including Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, and Florence.

Fellows engage in a rigorous academic schedule that includes the Advanced Human Genetics Graduate Course, participation in weekly conferences, monthly case reviews, and seminars. The fellowship emphasizes the development of comprehensive genetic evaluations, interpretation of genetic tests, and communication of results to patients and their families. An original research project is also expected, the results of which will be presented at an annual meeting.

2. Clinical Genetics Residency

Designed for those who have completed a primary care residency (family practice, internal medicine, OB/GYN, or pediatrics), this residency program provides exposure to the diagnosis and management of hereditary conditions. Residents are integrated into a clinical environment where they see approximately 2,500 new families annually, gaining experience in prenatal, pediatric, and adult genetics.

The clinical genetics residency includes core coursework in Advanced Human Genetics and ample opportunities for hands-on practice, including in-hospital consultations and the review of diverse genetic disorders. Residents participate in extensive training on rare genetic conditions and are well-prepared to pursue board certification through the American Board of Medical Genetics upon completion.

3. Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship

This three-year fellowship program allows candidates with MD or PhD degrees to specialize in molecular and cytogenetic diagnostics as well as research methodologies applicable to genetic disorders. Trainees receive extensive training in laboratory techniques allowing them to perform genetic analyses using both contemporary and traditional methods.

The fellowship emphasizes not only hands-on training in diagnostic laboratories but also includes opportunities for mentoring and conducting independent research. By the end of the program, fellows will have comprehensive competence in supervisory roles within clinical settings, preparing them for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
