The Maine Medical Center Program offers a General Surgery Residency that focuses on educating excellent surgeons with diverse opportunities in various surgical careers, including fellowships in specialties like vascular surgery, trauma surgery, surgical oncology, and others. The program provides a comprehensive learning experience supervised by the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and experienced surgical faculty.

For application requirements, candidates must have demonstrated a commitment to service or underserved populations and have had direct clinical experience for at least one year within the past 3 years in a hospital in the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada. The program accepts J1 visas for non-US citizens and requires proficiency in written and spoken English. USMLE scores are reviewed as part of the application process.
The program supports resident duty hour regulations and offers a night float system to ensure adequate rest for residents. Education is supplemented by a Surgery Simulation Curriculum at the Hannaford Center for Safety, Innovation, and Simulation. Residents are encouraged to engage in research activities and present at conferences throughout their training.
The program conducts interviews virtually in accordance with institutional policy. Residents can also participate in open houses after interviews to learn more about the program before ranking. Waitlisted applicants have the opportunity to interview if slots become available.
