The Tufts Medical Center Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Residency program offers a comprehensive training curriculum divided into PGY levels:

  • PGY-1: This year consists of a 6-month General Surgery Internship and a 6-month Otolaryngology Internship at Tufts MC. Residents rotate through various services encompassing General Surgery, SICU, Plastics, Neurosurgery, Anesthesia, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to gain diverse experience.

  • PGY-2: The Junior ENT resident role involves rotations at Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children's Hospital, and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children's Hospital. Residents handle tasks like pediatric endoscopy, foreign body management, myringotomy, tonsillectomy, and more.

  • PGY-3: Mid-level residents divide their time between Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children's Hospital and Tufts MC, along with a dedicated three-month block for research opportunities.

  • PGY-4: Senior residents undergo advanced training with rotations at Tufts MC, ENT Specialists group, and Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children's Hospital. Responsibilities include leading the house-staff team, coordinating consult services, engaging in otolaryngologic procedures, and participating in education.

  • PGY-5: Chief residents have a balanced year between Tufts MC, Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children's Hospital, and ENT Specialists. They lead the house staff, handle high-level ENT cases, and are prepared for future fellowships or attending roles.

Throughout the program, residents receive well-rounded exposure to various subspecialties within Otolaryngology and are supported in their career goals by the attending staff. The program emphasizes a blend of autonomy and supervision to enhance patient care and resident self-confidence.
