Tufts Medical Center Program

Tufts Medical Center offers a comprehensive and accredited two-year residency in thoracic surgery through the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program. This program is designed for individuals who have already completed an ACGME-accredited or equivalent residency in Surgery. The two-year training period is structured to ensure that each resident receives robust exposure to adult cardiac, general thoracic, and congenital cardiothoracic surgery, fostering the development of future leaders in the field.

The residency program consists of a small cohort of three residents, ensuring personalized attention and a tailored educational experience. The Program leadership is committed to fostering an environment that emphasizes teaching and mentorship, with faculty dedicated to guiding each resident through clinical and surgical training.

Curriculum and Rotations

The clinical training includes rotations at multiple prestigious facilities such as Tufts Medical Center, Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital. Residents typically spend 12 months at Tufts Medical Center, which performs approximately 1,000 heart operations and 300 thoracic cases annually. The program ensures progressive autonomy in clinical and surgical decision-making, allowing residents to take on significant responsibility and ultimately lead patient care teams comprised of physician assistants, general surgical residents, and medical students from Tufts University School of Medicine.

Cardiac surgery training includes exposure to a wide range of procedures such as coronary artery revascularization, valve repair and replacement, arrhythmia surgery, thoracic aortic surgery, and cardiac transplantation, among others. The thoracic surgery component offers experiences in minimally invasive techniques and complex surgeries, including esophageal resection for both benign and malignant conditions.

Educational Philosophy

The educational philosophy within the program is highly resident-focused, allowing individual needs and aspirations to be addressed. The program fosters a collaborative environment where residents interact closely with a dedicated faculty that values teaching and mentorship. This intimate setting encourages the development of each resident's passion within medicine.

Research and Conferences

Participation in clinical research projects is highly encouraged, though not mandatory. The residency includes dedicated small group conferences and city-wide mock oral exam preparation sessions. Such educational endeavors are designed to support residents as they evolve into accomplished independent cardiothoracic surgeons.

Residency Life and Benefits

The residency structure allows residents to take home call during the week and every other weekend. Although in-house call is not required, residents are responsible for emergency surgery and critical patient care. The program aligns with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education standards regarding work hours and provides three weeks of vacation annually. Resident remuneration aligns with national standards for 6th and 7th postgraduate years, ensuring a stable financial environment.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program is competitive and welcoming to international medical graduates (IMGs), as it actively seeks diversity in its resident cohort. Visa sponsorship is available, including H-1B and J-1 visa types, to support qualified IMGs who wish to apply. This flexibility in visa support further enhances the program's inclusivity.
