Tufts Medical Center Program

The Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Tufts Medical Center is an ACGME accredited training program that offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary one-year training in critical care medicine. The program is specifically designed for anesthesiology or surgical residency graduates seeking to advance their skills and knowledge in a critical care environment. Each year, the program accepts two candidates, emphasizing a selective and competitive application process.

Fellows engage in varied rotations across critical care units at Tufts Medical Center and the Boston VA Healthcare System located in West Roxbury. These rotations include:

• Medical Intensive Care Unit
• Neurocritical Care Unit
• Surgical Intensive Care Unit

The entire fellowship experience spans a minimum of 12 months, typically commencing in July. Notably, the program allows for up to one interrupted period due to valid reasons, supporting fellows with different circumstances.

Application Process

Applicants are required to have completed an accredited residency program in anesthesiology and must be able to obtain a Massachusetts medical license. The application package should include a letter of intent or personal statement, a comprehensive curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation from their current residency program. Applications are processed through the SF Match online fellowship matching service. Selected applicants will be invited for interviews to discuss their fit for the program, and admissions decisions will be made collectively by program leadership.

Clinical Opportunities

The fellowship program is structured to provide extensive clinical experiences. Over the course of the academic year, internal rotations encompass 2 to 3 months in various critical care units, including a robust elective rotation offering a multitude of specialty training options such as echocardiography, radiology, infectious diseases, and more. External rotations include a comprehensive 4-month experience in surgical intensive care and progressive care units, enabling participation in research and quality improvement initiatives.

During these rotations, fellows are expected to fulfill clinical roles involving high levels of responsibility. This includes conducting procedures, leading patient care rounds, and collaborating closely with physician's assistants and the primary care teams.

The curriculum of the fellowship integrates both clinical exposure and a didactic series. Fellows receive training from faculty members specializing in anesthesiology, cardiology, surgical disciplines, and other areas, cultivating their ability to manage critically ill patients effectively.
