Tufts Medical Center Program

The Tufts Medical Center Combined Hand Surgery Fellowship provides a comprehensive educational experience tailored for individuals pursuing advanced training in hand surgery. The program accepts two fellows annually, beginning on August 1 and concluding the following July 31. This fellowship is structured to equip participants with essential skills such as clinical judgment, technical proficiency, and teaching capabilities critical for successful practice in hand surgery.

Each fellow engages in a meticulously designed rotation system, which includes three months focusing specifically on hand surgery. This encompasses six months spent at Tufts Medical Center along with an additional six months at the New England Baptist Hospital/Hand Center at the Boston Sports and Shoulder Center. This rotational structure imparts valuable hands-on experience, allowing fellows to hone their surgical skills while also learning various nonsurgical treatment modalities and enhancing their diagnostic and decision-making proficiencies.

Curriculum

The formal curriculum within the fellowship includes a weekly hand surgery conference at Tufts Medical Center, where fellows can engage with expert faculty and peers in discussing surgical techniques and case studies. Additionally, fellows participate in a monthly Hand Journal Club focused on reviewing current literature and discussing recent advancements in the field. There is also a dedicated monthly conference that addresses rare hand surgery topics, providing exposure to less common scenarios which are crucial for developing a well-rounded competency in the field.

Furthermore, fellows are encouraged to attend a week-long micro-surgery course, which equips them with specialized skills necessary for intricate surgical procedures. These educational components are complemented by numerous opportunities for involvement in clinical and basic research, thus fostering a culture of inquiry and innovation within the field of hand surgery.
