Tufts Medical Center Program

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center is housed within the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is dedicated to providing comprehensive training that equips fellows with the necessary tools for successful careers in infectious diseases. The program emphasizes a balanced approach toward clinical training and research opportunities across diverse aspects of infectious diseases.

Clinical Training

Clinical Rotations

Fellows are provided a solid foundation through rotations at the inpatient and outpatient clinics, cultivating a holistic understanding of geographic medicine as well as handling both community-acquired and nosocomial infections. The fellowship entails a commitment of at least 12 clinical months, with an emphasis on achieving no less than 6 months of protected research time during the training period. Specifically, fellows engage in outpatient clinical training that includes 24 months of continuity clinic opportunities, allowing them to manage a panel of patients over the course of their fellowship.

Fellows have the option to choose a specific area of concentration for greater expertise, including:

• HIV infection
• Transplant infectious diseases
• Antimicrobial stewardship
• Infection prevention
• Wound care/hyperbaric oxygen

Clinical training is provided under the supervision of board-certified faculty and is integral to understanding various disease processes, notably during inpatient consultation rotations that cover a broad spectrum of infectious disease cases, such as surgical infections and HIV-related complications.

Training Sites

Tufts Medical Center and Partner Institutions

The fellowship provides training across multiple sites, including:

• Tufts Medical Center: A 415-bed facility known for a high volume of cases, enabling fellows to gain extensive experience in general ID consultations.
• Lahey Clinic: Offers exposure to a community-hospital environment and unique specialty cases, such as tick-borne illnesses and complex urologic cases.
• Lemuel Shattuck Hospital: Provides an opportunity to care for state-run populations, dealing with serious infections and historically significant challenges, including multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV care.

This mix of training sites allows fellows to gain a wide spectrum of clinical experiences in infectious diseases.

Research Opportunities

The program places significant emphasis on research training in clinical, basic, and translational infectious diseases, supported by over 25 post-doctoral trainees annually. The esteemed faculty facilitates cutting-edge research and offers a mentorship approach ensuring fellows align their research interests with their career aspirations. The first year includes meetings and poster sessions to help fellows choose potential mentors and projects that best fit their career goals.3

Visa Support and Fellow Diversity

The program supports various visa types, catering to international medical graduates and ensuring a diverse cohort of fellows. This emphasis on diversity promotes inclusivity and enriches the learning experience for all participants.

As a highly competitive program, it welcomes applications from both MD and DO graduates, including international medical graduates. However, candidates must fulfill special application requirements, such as having completed a year of clinical training in infectious diseases, along with consideration given to the time since medical school graduation.
