Mass General Brigham/Massachusetts General Hospital Program

The Massachusetts General Hospital Pathology Residency Training Program is committed to training the next generation of leaders in pathology through its innovative curriculum and collaborative training environment. This program offers a unique joint residency experience with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, beginning in July 2023. This consolidation allows residents to experience a diverse training environment across two prestigious hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School, enhancing their education in both anatomic and clinical pathology.

The program is designed to provide a comprehensive training experience with an emphasis on competency-based education. Residents have the opportunity to participate in a three-year program focused on either anatomic pathology or clinical pathology, or a combined four-year program that integrates both disciplines. This flexible structure enables residents to tailor their training according to their career aspirations and provides ample exposure to various subspecialties throughout their core training period.

Curriculum Overview

The residency curriculum is carefully structured to ensure a balanced mix of clinical and didactic learning. The first year is entirely dedicated to core anatomic pathology rotations, integrating surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, and cytopathology experiences. During the clinical pathology training, which constitutes the subsequent years, residents gain comprehensive insights into laboratory medicine through rotations in chemistry, microbiology, transfusion medicine, hematology, and molecular diagnostics.

Senior residents engage in advanced subspecialties and research opportunities, along with assuming leadership roles such as Chief Resident, which enhances their management skills and prepares them for future leadership positions in the field. As part of the training, residents benefit from exposure to current research practices and have access to the extensive resources provided by both hospitals.

The residency is thoroughly integrated to ensure residents receive substantial training at both Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Application Process and Requirements

The application process is competitive, and applicants are required to submit their applications via the ERAS pathway. Specific requirements may include a recent graduation year and restrictions related to previous examination failures. The program is open to international medical graduates (IMGs), fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse backgrounds. The program also provides visa support, and can sponsor appropriate visa types for qualified applicants.
