Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals Program
Overview
The Interventional Radiology Residency Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) offers a comprehensive training environment designed for aspiring interventional radiologists. The program includes both Integrated and Independent IR residency tracks. The goal is to cultivate highly skilled, clinically competent, and technically advanced interventional radiologists in the United States.
Adhering to a mission of excellence, the program boasts a diverse faculty comprised of twelve experienced clinical specialists in Vascular & Interventional Radiology. The training facilities include Froedtert Hospital and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, both equipped with world-class resources and cutting-edge technology.
Curriculum Overview
The residency offers extensive clinical experience with each resident encountering over 1,500 patients annually. The curriculum covers all facets of interventional radiology, specializing in diagnostic and endovascular procedures, image-guided interventional oncology therapies, and outpatient vein therapy procedures. Junior residents focus on diagnostic radiology in their first phase of training (PGY-2 to PGY-4), rotating through numerous essential fields, while senior residents (PGY-5 to PGY-6) dive deeply into interventional radiology.
1Training Sites
Training takes place in state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest Siemens technology, including single-plane flat-panel angiography suites, bi-plane angiography suites, hybrid operating rooms, and an integrated CT-angiography suite. The program's affiliation with the Division of Vascular Surgery facilitates comprehensive training in combined medical and procedural care.
1Research Opportunities
Residents are engaged in clinical trials and have opportunities to work on personal research projects. The division is involved with multicenter prospective randomized control trials, reinforcing the vital role of research in advancing the field of interventional radiology.
1Application Process and Requirements
Applications are accepted exclusively via ERAS, and candidates must apply for positions through the NRMP. The program welcomes graduates from accredited medical schools, and international medical graduate applicants must hold ECFMG certification. Candidates applying for both the Integrated IR and Diagnostic Radiology Residency programs are encouraged, and dual applications won't negatively impact their standing.
Visa Support
The program supports visa sponsorship specifically for J-1 visas for international medical graduates. This inclusive approach encourages diverse applicants from various backgrounds.
1Competitiveness
The competition for positions in the Interventional Radiology Residency Program is significant. The program strives to attract a diverse pool of candidates, including international medical graduates and DO applicants, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity.
