Overview

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency Training Program at Loyola University Medical Center offers a comprehensive two-year ACGME-approved experience that encompasses all facets of both adult and pediatric angiography and interventional procedures. This program is the ACGME equivalent of the previous fellowship pathway. Residents entering the program with Endovascular Surgical Interventional Radiology (ESIR) experience have the option to proceed with a one-year ACGME-approved pathway. The program aims to foster highly skilled interventional radiologists dedicated to lifelong learning and enhanced patient care.

1

The educational framework of the program integrates extensive clinical exposure through hands-on experience in angiography suites, alongside rigorous didactic instruction through various modalities including film interpretation and multidisciplinary conferences facilitated by attending faculty. The curriculum is designed to ensure that residents gain a solid foundation and advanced skills necessary for a successful career in interventional radiology.

2

Curriculum and Rotations

Throughout their training, residents engage in a wide spectrum of interventional radiology practices. Key areas of focus include vascular diagnosis and intervention, as well as non-vascular interventions. The curriculum emphasizes critical specialty procedures such as regional tumor therapy for liver and kidney malignancies, minimally invasive treatments for uterine fibroid disease, vertebral augmentation to address painful compression fractures, and endovascular interventions for both atherosclerotic and congenital vascular diseases. The program maintains a commitment to excellence in education, as evidenced by the structure of weekly didactic conferences targeted at resident and medical student education.

3

Clinical Exposure

The clinical aspect of the IR program is organized to provide residents with exposure to a full range of interventional procedures, supported by a robust faculty comprised of five full-time attending physicians. Annually, the program performs approximately 15,000 interventional procedures within the Loyola University Medical Center, a 545-bed tertiary care facility and level one trauma center. The dedicated procedure suites are equipped with advanced technologies including state-of-the-art cone beam CT and rotational angiography, ensuring residents experience cutting-edge practices and methodologies.

3

Research Opportunities

Research is an integral component of the training experience. Accepted trainees are required to select a research project, benefiting from mentorship by program faculty throughout the process. The objective is to present findings at leading national meetings such as the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET) and the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). Each summer, the section initiates a project planning cycle aimed at cultivating submissions for the upcoming SIR spring meetings, thus encouraging scholarly activity and contributions to the field.
