Trainees gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and managing conditions related to acid-base physiology, fluid and electrolytes, acute and chronic renal failure, continuous renal replacement therapy, dialysis modalities, renal transplantation, glomerular diseases, nephrolithiasis, and hypertension. Training Facilities

Fellows rotate through the inpatient, outpatient, and consultative services at the Loyola University Medical Center and the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. The teaching hospitals provide a diverse patient population, mirroring chronic kidney disease prevalence and related disorders in the general population. Fellows also gain practical experience managing end-stage renal disease in dedicated dialysis units and perform interventional nephrology procedures in specialized clinics.

Research Opportunities

Research constitutes a mandatory component of the Nephrology Fellowship program. Trainees are allocated protected time for research activities, enabling them to engage comprehensively with the scientific method, encompassing project design and implementation, data analysis, and ethical considerations in clinical research. While conducting their own research projects, fellows are encouraged to contribute to publications and presentations at national meetings.

Application Process

Applicants seeking to join the Nephrology Fellowship program must fulfill specific criteria which include:

• Submission of an application through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
• Official medical school transcripts
• A Dean's letter from medical school
• Official board scores (USMLE, COMLEX)
• Three letters of recommendation, with one from the internal medicine residency program director
• A curriculum vitae
• A personal statement
• A valid ECFMG certificate for graduates from non-U.S. or Canada medical schools

It is important to note that applicants must hold a valid permanent visa or U.S. citizenship, as H1B visas are not accepted. Additionally, candidates must possess a valid Illinois medical license by the commencement of the fellowship, along with a minimum of three years of accredited postgraduate training in internal medicine, ideally being eligible for or having passed the ABIM examination.

Visa Sponsorship

The Nephrology Fellowship program sponsors J-1 visas for international medical graduates (IMGs), but does not support H1B visas. This makes the fellowship accessible to a diverse group of candidates, including those with DO backgrounds and IMGs, thereby enhancing the cultural and educational richness of the program.
