The Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin aims to train subspecialists in Gynecologic Oncology who excel in providing comprehensive care for patients facing gynecologic cancers like uterine and ovarian cancer. Throughout the three-year fellowship, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, fellows engage in extensive clinical training coupled with research opportunities designed to enhance their capabilities as leaders and educators in Gynecologic Oncology. Fellows are taught statistical, epidemiological, and laboratory methodologies essential for developing independent research projects relevant to gynecologic malignancies.

Fellowship Application Process

In the application process, each fellow selected can expect a competitive environment; however, the program embraces diversity and welcomes applications from all candidates. The fellowship offers one first-year position annually, and interested applicants must submit through the ERAS system. Required documents include a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (from the Residency Program Director, Chair of the OB/GYN Department, and a mentor in Gynecologic Oncology), USMLE scores, a personal statement, medical school transcripts, a Dean's letter, and CREOG scores (if not part of the ERAS application).

There is no set eligibility criterion regarding prior US clinical experience, making it an inclusive program for all medical graduates, including IMGs. Interview invitations are extended based on a holistic review of each application file, which is typically completed by early summer.

Educational Conferences for Fellows

Dedicated time is allocated for GynOnc fellows to attend educational conferences every Wednesday, encompassing didactic lectures based on ACGME guidelines. The program features a Gynecologic Oncology Journal Club, where fellows present research articles for critical evaluation, as well as participation in weekly tumor boards focused on treatment planning for gynecologic cancer patients. Other seminar series also enhance the fellows' comprehension of ongoing research initiatives and foster professional collaboration.

Fellowship Experience and Rotation Schedule

The Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship comprises various clinical and research rotations designed to provide comprehensive training. Over a 20-month duration, fellows engage deeply in inpatient and outpatient settings, performing initial consultations, adjunct therapies, and common gynecologic procedures such as colposcopy and biopsies.

Fellows also experience specialized rotations, including one month in a Critical Care setting in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Radiation Oncology, Colorectal Surgery, and Palliative Medicine. This multifaceted approach ensures that fellows acquire a well-rounded understanding of various dimensions within gynecologic oncology.
