The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center offers an ACGME accredited residency training program in Anatomic Pathology. The program emphasizes clinical diagnosis, translational research, and modern technological tools to enhance accuracy in deciphering disease mechanisms. Candidates must have completed an MD degree from an approved U.S. or Canadian medical school or hold an ECFMG certificate. Successful applicants usually have prior research experience or a Ph.D. degree.

The Anatomic Pathology Program consists of three years of rotations and subspecialty training with an optional fourth year available for selected residents to participate in additional research activities. Residents gain diverse experience in postmortem, surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, and molecular pathology. Additionally, subspecialty rotations in forensic pathology, surgical pathology, and pediatric pathology from affiliated institutions broaden the training offered at NIH. The training also covers dermatopathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, flow cytometry, immunopathology, informatics, management, and quality improvement.

The program accepts three new applicants each year and participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) System by December 1 for appointments starting the following July. Qualified candidates may be invited for interviews after review of completed applications.
