The National Capital Consortium (NCC) Child Neurology Residency Program is a specialized training program affiliated with the NCC Neurology Residency Program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). The program provides comprehensive training in Child Neurology for active duty members of the United States military.
Applicants must be currently on active duty in the military or about to enter active duty through programs like the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). The residency program offers two training pathways: a 5-year preselect pathway and a traditional pathway. Depending on the pathway chosen, applicants may start after completing pediatrics, neurology, or directly enter the Child Neurology program.
During the 3-year Child Neurology residency, trainees rotate through various subspecialties including Adult Neurology, Child Neurology, child psychiatry, epilepsy, neuromuscular, vascular, ophthalmology, and more. A portion of the training is completed at Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, DC. Continuity clinic sessions, didactics, and daily teaching conferences are integral parts of the training.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible for board certification in both Neurology with special qualification in Child Neurology, and Pediatrics. The program aims to provide residents with top-notch training in Neurology, instill a compassionate approach to patient care, and prepare military officers for the diverse challenges in military operational environments.
