Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center Program

The Otolaryngology Residency program at Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center focuses on providing a comprehensive training experience to develop proficiency in otolaryngology. The program offers a full spectrum of clinical exposure, emphasizing various subspecialties such as head and neck oncology, pediatric otolaryngology, otology, and facial plastics and reconstructive surgery, among others.

Residents at Penn State Hershey have the opportunity to train at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, and on-campus and off-site outpatient clinics. Call responsibilities include the emergency room, inpatient consults, and inpatient otolaryngology patients, with call schedules generally maintained at every fourth night.

The residency program offers three weeks of vacation per year and additional education time for conferences and courses. Residents have access to electronic journals and textbooks through the Harrell Health Sciences Library and departmental resources. The program aims to guide residents in developing a robust knowledge base, fostering lifelong learning, and providing graduated responsibility in patient care and medical research.

Application to the Otolaryngology Residency program at Penn State Hershey requires submitting an ERAS application listing experiences, at least three letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, a medical school transcript, and a personal statement. The program offers residency spots for both a clinical track and a research track.

Residents in the research track spend one year in research activities before starting the traditional five-year clinical track. All residents, regardless of track, are required to participate in structured research activities with at least one long-term project and present their research annually.
