Rochester Regional Health Program

Rochester General Hospital's Interventional Radiology Residency Program offers an in-depth and comprehensive training structure focused on both Interventional Radiology (IR) and Diagnostic Radiology (DR). The program features two primary tracks: the Integrated IR/DR Residency and the Independent IR Residency, complemented by the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) option.

The Integrated IR/DR program is a five-year training structure designed for medical graduates interested in completing their residency in both fields, allowing for comprehensive dual certification. This innovative approach addresses the evolution of IR as a critical clinical service, emphasizing the importance of periprocedural care and patient management, thereby enhancing the overall training experience. The Integrated track allows for joint training with Diagnostic Radiology residents, ensuring that IR/DR residents gain ample exposure to both diagnostic imaging and interventional techniques from the outset.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum spans five years with early years primarily dedicated to Diagnostic Radiology, during which Integrated IR residents will also participate in selected IR rotations. The first three years (PGY 2-4) are spent alongside traditional DR residents, focusing on core imaging techniques and interpretations, as well as specific IR rotations interspersed throughout. The final two years (PGY 5-6) concentrate almost exclusively on clinical IR training.

Independent Interventional Radiology Residency

The Independent IR Residency is a one-to-two-year program aimed at residents who have completed a Diagnostic Radiology residency. It allows them to specialize in interventional techniques, ultimately preparing them for board certification in both IR and DR. Flexibility in the program allows for an individualized approach, enabling residents to focus on specific interventional skills and gain extensive hands-on experience.

Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR)

This optional path allows second-year Diagnostic Radiology residents to apply during their training, with one resident selected annually. This early designation enables focused IR training during the fourth DR year, elevating the resident's training pipeline to match for a one-year Independent IR residency after completion of DR.

Research and Clinical Exposure

Rochester General Hospital provides a robust clinical and operational setting for the IR residency, equipped with comprehensive facilities and a variety of procedures performed routinely including arterial disease interventions, venous disease interventions, interventional oncology, and multiple urological and nephrological interventions. The program strongly encourages resident involvement in research, which is supported during dedicated research time built into the training.1

Visa Support and Application Requirements

The program supports J-1 and H-1B visa sponsorship for international medical graduates (IMGs) and expeditious processing of applications is facilitated for eligible candidates. Applicants must submit through ERAS, and a minimum requirement includes a medical degree from an accredited institution, a Dean's Letter, CV, Personal Statement, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation. Notably, there isn't a mandatory minimum board score for eligibility, emphasizing a holistic review of all applications. Interviews are highly competitive; thus applying early is recommended.2
