The SAUSHEC Ophthalmology Residency Program is a three-year integrated training program in ophthalmology located in the military medical centers in San Antonio. The program aims to exceed the guidelines set by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the Residency Review Committee for Ophthalmology. It offers six resident slots per year group, with four reserved for the U.S. Air Force and two for the U.S. Army. Residents gain experience in various ophthalmology subspecialties including Cornea & External Disease, Oculoplastics, Glaucoma, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Retina & Vitreous, Neuro-Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmic Pathology. There is a strong academic affiliation between the residency program and The University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio.
Applicants are required to be 4th-year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) for applying to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Selection criteria include academic performance, USMLE scores, recommendation letters, interest in military service, leadership potential, and overall fitness. The application deadline is before the 15th of September of the year before training commences.
During the residency program, residents undergo rotations and training in essential ophthalmologic skills, expand their surgical experience, and participate in various educational activities.
