Southern Illinois University Program

The Southern Illinois University Program in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Springfield is a well-structured residency program focusing on training surgeons in a comprehensive manner, equipping them with the necessary skills to provide exemplary care in a compassionate and ethical environment.

Application Process

The program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). It currently offers four categorical spots per year, without any preliminary positions or observerships. Applications must include three letters of recommendation and a personal statement, in addition to requiring applicants to have completed Step 2 prior to applying. The reviews involve a holistic assessment that considers experiences, attributes, competencies, metrics, and diversity factors, alongside USMLE scores and interview performance. Moreover, only applicants within three years of graduation from medical school are considered, with a few candidates from foreign medical schools being invited annually. The program currently accommodates several international medical graduates (IMGs).

Importantly, the program sponsors J1 visas; however, it does not provide support for H visas or benefits.

Curriculum

The residency in colon and rectal surgery is part of a broad five-year curriculum in general surgery that covers all major surgical disciplines. The goal is to prepare graduates for practice in general surgery or for fellowship training in surgical subspecialties. The program fosters a strong clinical foundation complemented by educational excellence and research opportunities. A high volume of surgical cases in a variety of complex procedures will enhance residents' proficiency throughout their training.

Training Sites

Training occurs primarily at two teaching hospitals: Springfield Memorial Hospital and HSHS St. John’s Hospital. These facilities serve as tertiary locations for central and southern Illinois, supporting the development of surgical skills and patient care.

Research Opportunities

The program has a robust tradition of research, with residents required to complete quality improvement research during their initial years. Residents are engaged in various outcomes and translational research projects and may collaborate with scientists in related departments.
