University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Program

The Neurological Surgery Residency Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a seven-year ACGME-accredited program focused on training future leaders in academic neurosurgery. The program aims to develop world-class neurosurgeons by providing the highest quality surgical and scientific training.

Residents are expected to assimilate teaching provided by the faculty, maintain active reading plans for neurosurgical sciences, practice clinical and surgical skills, and attend educational activities offered by the program. Periodic assessments throughout the seven-year program ensure residents' clinical competence. The program is designed in alignment with ACGME core competencies and upon completion, residents are eligible for certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS).

Requirements for applying to the Neurosurgery Residency Program include submitting USMLE scores, a Dean's letter, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement through ERAS. The application deadline is December 31, with priority given to applicants with full applications received by November 1.

During the seven years of training, residents develop competencies like basic and clinical neurosurgery knowledge, compassionate patient care, safe and effective surgical procedures, clinical judgment, effective communication, practice-based improvement activities, and adherence to ethical principles.
