Program Overview

The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics offers an ACGME-accredited Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency. This program consists of six years of training, with one resident per year. Its goal is to educate trainees in both the art and science of plastic and reconstructive surgery, preparing them to become highly competent and responsible plastic surgeons.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive training over a three-year cycle, utilizing materials such as the Plastic Surgery: 6-Volume set by Peter Neligan. Didactic sessions and conferences occur on Monday and Tuesday mornings, enhancing interactive learning through discussions, Q&A sessions, and hands-on skills labs. The program actively encourages scholarly activity. Each trainee is expected to complete at least one research project suitable for presentation each year. Several ongoing research initiatives are available, including:

Application Process and Competitiveness

The program utilizes the Plastic Surgery Common Application (PSCA) for residency applications. It is advised that applicants have a USMLE score greater than 215, although there is no absolute cutoff. Candidates who graduated more than five years ago may find it more difficult to match. Applicants are encouraged to have U.S. clinical experience and are expected to complete Step 2 prior to application.
