Program Overview

The program in Plastic Surgery at the University of Minnesota aims to provide excellent clinical care alongside a robust educational experience for trainees. Curriculum Structure

The integrated residency program spans six years and combines diverse rotations across multiple healthcare facilities. The initial two years predominantly focus on general surgery, with dedicated rotations in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery each year. As residents progress, especially into their third year, they receive a balanced mix of Plastic Surgery and electives that comply with the American Board of Plastic Surgery's recommendations, ensuring comprehensive training that includes orthopedics, ENT, oral surgery, burn surgery, anesthesia, dermatology, and oculoplastics.

Clinical Experience

During the latter stages of training, residents immerse themselves primarily in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery clinical experiences, focusing on areas such as breast reconstruction, cosmetic surgery, hand surgery, and microsurgery. Notably, research rotations are integrated into the residency curriculum, specifically during the third and fifth years, allowing residents ample opportunity to engage in scholarly activities.

• University of Minnesota Health: Houses diverse general surgical services and outpatient clinics focusing on tertiary care cases.
• Regions Hospital: A Level I trauma center where residents encounter a wide range of plastic surgery cases, particularly in trauma and reconstructive surgery.
• VA Healthcare System: Offers an environment where residents manage complex reconstructive challenges, enhancing hands-on experience.
• North Memorial Medical Center: Exposes residents to a private practice environment with a focus on aesthetic procedures and reconstructive surgeries.

Research Opportunities

Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements

The program offers various visa support options. Applicants must hold either a J-1/J-2 visa or have permanent residence status. Notably, the program does not sponsor H-1B visas, and F-1, M-1, and O-1 are also not considered acceptable. By adhering to the ACGME eligibility requirements, candidates must graduate from an accredited medical school in the U.S., Canada, or an international institution, fulfilling specific criteria that include certification from the ECFMG.
