In the subsequent years, residents participate in rotations that cover a wide range of anesthesiology subspecialties including regional anesthesia, critical care, and pediatric anesthesiology. The program places a strong emphasis on experiential learning through hands-on practice in both operating rooms and intensive care units (ICUs). Residents complete a total of six months of critical care training in surgical intensive care units (SICU) and cardiovascular intensive care units (CVICU), with supervised learning under faculty who are anesthesiologist intensivists.

Research is a significant focus within the curriculum, and residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities. The program supports residents who wish to embark on an academic career in anesthesiology through a dedicated research track. Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The University of Minnesota Program is recognized as a competitive environment. It welcomes applications from both U.S. and International Medical Graduates. However, applicants must possess a valid ECFMG certification if trained outside the U.S. The program sponsors J1 visas, though H1-B visas are not available.

Special application requirements include passing scores on the USMLE Step 1 and submission of a personal statement, medical school transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Prior clinical experience is advantageous, especially for IMGs. The residency program reviews applications on a rolling basis with a final submission deadline of November 1.

Visa Support

The program offers visa sponsorship for J1 visas, making it accessible for international medical graduates who meet the eligibility criteria. Unfortunately, it does not provide support for H1-B visas at this time.
