University of Kansas School of Medicine Program

The Cytopathology Fellowship at the University of Kansas School of Medicine is a one-year accredited program designed for the advanced training of up to two academically-oriented cytopathologists. This fellowship focuses primarily on diagnostic cytopathology and the interpretation and performance of fine needle aspirations (FNAs).

The program provides extensive and in-depth training that includes the interpretation of liquid-based thin-layer cytology techniques, rapid on-site evaluations (ROSE), optimal specimen triage, and involvement with immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and flow cytometry. Annually, the program evaluates approximately 16,000 patient cases, comprising around 8,000 gynecologic cases, 6,000 nongynecologic specimens, and 2,000 FNA cases, which ensures a diverse training experience for fellows 1.

Curriculum and Training

During the initial training period, fellows will work closely under supervision, transitioning to a more independent role particularly in the latter part of the academic year. The fellowship includes mandatory participation in various conferences, along with the teaching of pathology residents and medical students to foster a comprehensive educational environment.

Research plays a vital role in the fellowship, and fellows are encouraged to design and complete their own research projects to further their academic development.

Application Requirements

To apply for this fellowship, candidates must be Board eligible or certified in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. It’s also required that applicants have or be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Kansas. Moreover, preference is given to those candidates who have demonstrated a notable interest in an academic career in cytopathology. The application process requires the submission of a standardized application form, a current curriculum vitae, a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and USMLE or COMLEX scores 1.

Fellowship Competitiveness

The Cytopathology Fellowship is competitive, and preference is often given to candidates demonstrating a strong academic background. This includes both traditional MD pathway graduates and DOs. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are also welcome to apply, provided they meet the specific eligibility requirements set by the program. However, candidates must be cautious as the program has limited annual intake, making it crucial to present a strong application 1.
