The Neurocritical Care Fellowship at the University of Kansas School of Medicine offers a rigorous training program aimed at developing expertise in managing critically ill neurological patients. This program presents two pathways: a one-year track tailored for fellows with significant critical care experience and a two-year traditional pathway designed for neurology or emergency medicine residents.

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship's core faculty is composed of four full-time neurointensivists certified by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The multidisciplinary faculty also includes specialists from various departments, providing a comprehensive educational experience. Fellows typically train at The University of Kansas Health System, which features a cutting-edge 28-bed Neuro ICU designed specifically for critically ill neurology, neurosurgery, and ENT patients. Notably, continuous electronic EEG monitoring is accessible to all patients in the unit.

Rotation Details

The fellowship encompasses an extensive rotation schedule that allows fellows to gain experience across various critical care settings, including:

• Neuro ICU
• Medical/Transplant ICU
• Trauma ICU
• Neurosurgery
• Stroke
• Cardiothoracic ICU

During the two-year track, fellows engage in specific rotations lasting from one to eight months and have the opportunity to undertake elective experiences, such as:

• Research
• Palliative Care
• Electroencephalography (EEG)
• Neuroradiology

The one-year track is structured for those who have already completed rigorous postgraduate trainings in areas such as anesthetic or surgical critical care, culminating in specific rotations through specialized services.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are highly encouraged to engage in research activities, participating in various clinical studies, including StrokeNet clinical trials and industry-sponsored projects. Mentorship is provided to enhance the fellows' research experience and skills.
