Neurocritical care (multidisciplinary)ACGME Code:
5501618003At the University of Chicago, the Neurocritical Care program is designed to address the needs of patients suffering from catastrophic brain injuries and critical neurological disorders. This multidisciplinary program brings together a team of specialists who are extensively trained in the management of complex neurological conditions including stroke and status epilepticus, which involves acute, prolonged seizures.
The program's approach revolves around effective intervention and comprehensive care that enhances the recovery chances for each patient. The dedicated specialty critical care unit, located in the Center for Care and Discovery in Hyde Park, is equipped with advanced monitoring and treatment facilities that cater to the unique requirements of patients needing neurocritical care.
Multidisciplinary Care Team
The NeuroICU operates with a multidisciplinary team of professionals including specially trained physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare personnel. This team configuration facilitates coordinated and personalized care tailored to each patient's specific needs. Nurses in the NeuroICU perform crucial assessments of patients’ vital functions, speech, movement, and cranial nerve responses on an hourly basis to ensure continuous monitoring and timely intervention.
Rehabilitation Services
Rehabilitation is a key component of the care provided, with physical and occupational therapists mobilizing patients as early as feasible to build their strength and address rehabilitation requirements. Additionally, highly trained speech-language pathologists conduct evaluations of swallowing function, while experienced dietitians offer nutritional guidance tailored to individual patient needs. Critical care pharmacists support the team by ensuring that medications are managed effectively and safely throughout the patient's stay in NeuroICU.
Patient-Centered Philosophy
The underlying philosophy of the Neurocritical Care program is grounded in patient-centered care, emphasizing the importance of tailoring treatment to each patient's unique circumstances. The team actively collaborates with family members and caretakers to establish appropriate treatment goals that align with patient needs. This collaborative approach includes treatment decisions being made by a well-rounded team consisting of neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, vascular surgeons, and physicians across related specialties.
This level of experienced, responsive, and personalized care within the NeuroICU not only aids in patient recuperation but also fosters a relationship between the care team and the patients' families, ensuring that all aspects of the patient's recovery journey are considered.
Through this program, patients receive sophisticated care for various neurological disorders, which enhances their chance for recovery and supports them in moving towards the next phase of their rehabilitation.
