University of Kansas (Wichita) Program

The University of Kansas (Wichita) Internal Medicine Residency Program offers outstanding clinical training through a fully accredited ACGME residency program. The program provides a three-year categorical Internal Medicine training track and a one-year preliminary medicine training option. They also offer a four-year Medicine-Pediatrics training program in collaboration with the Pediatrics Department.

The Internal Medicine Department at the University of Kansas (Wichita) focuses on providing residents with maximum clinical exposure while meeting ACGME requirements. They employ a "4+1" scheduling model that separates inpatient and outpatient rotations, allowing residents to concentrate on the learning experience for each clinical rotation followed by an ambulatory clinic experience. Residents have exposure to three different hospital systems: Wesley Medical Center, Ascension Via Christi Hospitals, and the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. Furthermore, residents have access to their clinic at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, with dedicated faculty and staff supporting their ambulatory experience.

The program is designed to prepare residents for various career paths, whether in rural primary care or urban settings as hospitalists, primary care physicians, or subspecialists. Residents have flexibility in shaping their training experience to align with their future career goals.

Regarding the application process, the program participates in the National Residency Matching Program, and applicants must apply through the ERAS system. They encourage applicants to complete Step 1 and Step 2 CK exams by November for timely review before interviews. International medical graduates must have passed Step 1 and Step 2 CK & CS by early November for consideration, with residency beginning on July 1. The program accepts residents only on a J1 visa and does not specify a minimum USMLE score requirement but considers it as one of the factors in selecting applicants. Experience in the US is recommended but not required.
