Short rotations in specialty clinics, lasting between four to eight weeks, enable fellows to gain exposure to various subspecialties.

Year Two Training

In the second year, the focus shifts more towards research and self-directed scholarly activities. Fellows continue their involvement in continuity clinics, outpatient management, and inpatient consults, but they also allocate significant time to pursue research. An optional third year is available for those interested in enhancing their academic skills and competencies.

Training Sites and Resources

The University of Kentucky Medical Center serves as the primary institution for training, featuring 569 beds, 100 intensive care beds, and comprehensive facilities for nuclear medicine and special diagnostics. Additionally, the Lexington Veterans Affairs Hospital contributes significantly to training resources, providing a total of 199 beds. Outpatient clinics ensure high volumes of endocrinology-related encounters, fostering an extensive hands-on experience for fellows.

Facilities such as the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center promote a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on comprehensive care, education, and research in diabetes, while strong collaborations with other specialties, including surgery, nephrology, and pediatrics, enhance the training experience.
